I also find that I can’t select the types of compressed filoes I want it toi handle. So, I can’t set it to automatically process .zip for example.
This app used to be a reference, it was doing an amazing job. Badly it hasn’t been updated for the last 2 years, and it wont works on a fresh install of Yosemite (will work on an upgraded system if it was previously installed tho).
As of recently, when opening something with the unarchiver it opens up the preference pane (which is also broken) and requires you to manually go through the unarchiver app and locate the file you wish to open and extract it through there.
You can no longer “Select All” or “Deselect All”. You can’t even select or deselect individual archive formats. Don’t bother with this app. A huge disappointment.
Tried-it, re-installed it three times, Simply does NOT work. Don’t waste your time, go for something else.
Today was the first time I’ve encountered RAR files since moving to the Mac, and The Unarchiver handled them flawlessly. To open a RAR file you just right-click on the file and choose “Open With…” Simple! Selecting The Unarchiver as the default app to handle RAR files is also simple, though it is apparently a different, easy procedure than it was in previous versions of the app. Everything is briefly explained when you launch the app.
Always done what I need Reliable Idiot proof Good software
This app does not extract the contents of winmail.dat files, which I sometimes receive as attachments in email from Windows users for unknown reasons. I always have to contact them to request they email the original file to me, which apparently is contained inside the "winmail.dat" file. Possibly winmail.dat is not considered a compressed file, but it would sure be great if this app could deal with that kind of file as well. Otherwise worked flawlessly.
Great zip utility. Never had any issues with all kinds of compressed files.
The latest version will not unpack RAR files properly. As soon as you click on any RAR set, it displays an error that one of the files is bad, but hitting continue unpacks Ok (I think). Plus, the app no longer cleans up (deletes) the source files. I would stay with the previous version folks, until someone fixes this!
I tried opening a .zip file of a virtual machine from Microsoft (IE testing VM) and the default app with OS X kept screwing it up. This app opened it correctly and perfectly. It’s my default instead of the OS X utility.
I got this just to extract a .rar file but it doesn’t i looked up extension:rar on here and this was the top thing but it doesn’t work.
Im using macos sierra and this thing doesnt seem to do anything other than showing what kind of file it can handle.
I needed this to open a .rar file and it worked fine and instantly.
Opening a compressed file just brings the Unarchiver pref window explaining how to set the app as the default one to open different format. This behaviour is useless. You have to go through the file menu to unarchive the file. There is no integration in macOS (Sierra) at all. An action in the secondary click menu is very much necessary!
This is a small but yet powerful application that can decompress lots of files extensions. I think the best feature is that it can decompress Japanese files without lossing the file names, as many Japanse compressed files present problems when are uncompressed causing file naming problems or even corruption of the file.
The Unarchiver opens just about everything Ive ever tried. Fast and stable -- excellent utility that I use daily.
OS Version: Mac OS X 10.8.4 (12E55) ではアプリが必ずクラッシュして使用できませんでした。
I had a file ending in .gz and this software said it could not extract it. When I examined the file it turned out the extension was erroneous and the file was not compressed at all. Maybe the Unarchiver should try to detect if a file is not compressed.
